TEAC 7160 Literacy and Numeracy for Secondary Teaching

TEAC 7160  Literacy and Numeracy for Secondary Teaching  (10 Credit Points)  
This subject addresses how to effectively teach literacy and numeracy across a range of secondary subjects. It focuses on how to teach oral language, phonics, reading and comprehension strategies within different disciplines. Students will learn about how writing can be used to develop adolescents’ learning and depth of understanding using explicit, guided and independent pedagogies for writing. The subject covers the six strands of mathematics including number, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability. Students will apply proficiencies in understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. The use of scaffolds and application of numeracy in a range of curriculum areas will be addressed. This subject is included in the Foundation Phase of the Master of Teaching program.
